Kai’s Fishing Trip

Family Life

The Adventure

For the past year I’ve been trying to take Kai fishing. Charter boats aren’t cheap and my friend who had a boat moved last year so we haven’t been able to go out off shore fishing for a while.

A few months ago I ran into a friend that I surf with at the grocery store. We got to talking and he happens to have a boat, is partially retired and goes fishing almost weekly. He invited me to come out and in February he took Kai and I out fishing. Within a couple hours we landed a 93 & 1/2 lb yellowfin Ahi tuna!

On top of that we pulled in another 4 skipjack tuna, got to see multiple schools of fish jumping, and tons of dolphins. Most captains sell their fish to the fish market and this one tuna would have been worth over $1000!

My friend though would rather bless others with the fish. He was super generous and gave us over 30 pounds fresh Ahi! We got to make lots of fresh poké, blessed friends with a cookout with thick seared Ahi steaks, made sashimi, and blessed over a dozen more friends with bags of fresh Ahi - because fish is better when its fresh. We also tried making tuna jerky with a dehydrator.

Big Mahalo to Duane for taking us out.

OUTPOST PANAMA is on an island called Bastiementos on the Caribbean Sea side of northern Panama, up near Costa Rica. The house, with room for 40, is perfectly situated in the jungle, nestled among many indigenous Ngobe Indian tribes. Completely off the grid we produce power by solar, catch rain water, and are surrounded by lush plants, fruit trees, and 3 streams on 8 acres of land. There are no roads and our only access is by water taxis that run in and out of town a 10-15 minute ride away. When we were given this property it was perfect because of its proximity to the Ngobe indian tribes scattered along the river systems of coastal Panama. With much of the Panamanian coastline undeveloped it could take up to a week to reach these tribes by land. With our partnerSHIP m/v Making Waves, we can pull up within a day and start ministry.
